The greatest force for good in the world! Right? Well sometimes we have to wonder. My uncle Bill was a pilot in China during WWII and flew a P51 at the end of the war. I don't think he would be called a hero in the classical sense, but for me he was idolized. I had the great honor of sitting with him as he remenisted about his exploits. I sat with another fellow who was an F4 Marine pilot who told some fantastic stories of misbehavior. The military seemed to provide some great challenges to "get away with something".
Uncle Bill talked of smuggling booze into China, and chilling rice "beer" (???) by opening the bomb bay doors of a B24 at 10+ thousand feet. The Marine pilot described angling the exhaust from his F4 as he flew over some Generals in a tent on a beach and blowing the tent down. I remember sitting in the back of a deuce and a half and backing up to warehouse to steal some food supplies that couldn't be gotten through normal channels. Every time I get together with former military, the stories flow. What makes our military great is the commitment to get things done, despite what we often view as the stupidity of those commanding us. Along the way, we sometimes bend the rules. -- Enough
